BSB: Rea 'relieved' by Cartagena pace

MCN Sport, by Oli Rushby

Gino Rea has said he is ‘relieved’ to have come to his first test as a Bennetts British Superbike rider and posted consistently quick times after delving into the unknown with the new OMG Racing Suzuki team.

A rookie to BSB for 2018, Rea has to familiarise himself with many of the UK circuits as well as a 1000cc superbike after his time in the Moto2 and World Supersport championships.

If the times provided by teams are to be believed, Rea was second quickest to only reigning champion Shane Byrne after three days on track at Cartagena and the young Brit claims he was consistently able to post quick times.

“Coming into this test the bike hadn’t turned a wheel, so it’s hard to know where you stand in terms of the bike, the team, the set-up and me riding a superbike,” he told MCN.

“You always believe in yourself but you don’t know until you’re out there doing it. We’re three days in and the progress has been incredible – the way I’m working with the team, the people in the team, the bike and how it’s suited my riding style is everything I’d hoped for.

“It’s a nice relief that I am able to do fast times consistently and not just bang in one or two and then drop off a cliff. When it comes to the race that’s what is going to be important and even if we haven’t done a one-off flier qualifying lap we’re still there so to see my times stack up against everyone else is nice.”
