Gino Rea just misses out on points finish after last lap mistake at Aragon GP

Gino Rea and his Montaze Broz Racing Team came within a lap of finishing in the points at the Aragon GP. After finishing 15th fastest on Friday, Gino endured a difficult qualifying session including a small crash which resulted in him starting from 21st on the grid. The Londoner made a good start and moved into 16th position throughout the race, riding through some pain with his recently broken right hand. Struggling in the last sector which includes the long straight, Rea had planned to make a pass on Danny Kent for 15th on the final lap but made a mistake with the lap countdown, thinking there were two laps remaining instead of one. 

Tuenti HP's Axel Pons made a tough move on Gino before the final straight running wide in the process, but Rea still couldn't take advantage to repass him on the straight. Exiting the final turn, Rea crossed the chequered flag in 17th, just missing that points finish. 

 

 

Gino adds: "Today was our best result of the year, we were very close to getting in the points and we should have. I was in 16th and had planned to pass Danny for 15th on the final lap but I made a mistake, I thought there was one more lap to go and Pons passed me so I finished 17th. I'm annoyed I didn't get the points but happy to be fighting for that position. I was loosing a lot in the last sector with the long straight so we need to work something out there. Even when Pons made a mistake out of the tight left onto the straight, I still couldn't get past him. I'd like to say thanks to everyone in Gino Rea Montaze Broz Racing Team for their continued hard work, I'm just sorry I didn't get that point. 

 

 

"The MotoGP circus now goes to the flyaway races starting at Sepang where I was on the podium last year, unfortunately as a wildcard team Gino Rea Montaze Broz will be missing these due to budget. We'll be back for Valencia, the final race of 2013 where I also battled for a podium in damp conditions last year."

 

 

The next MotoGP race takes place on 13th October at Sepang, Malaysia where Gino was on the podium in 2012. Gino Rea Montaze Broz will be back for their final wildcard appearance at Valencia, Spain on 10th November.
