Gino Rea battles from last to 15th at Austin GP
Austin-Owned AGT Rea Racing Team Finished 25th of 34 in the Moto2 Division of the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas.
April 15, 2014 – AGT Rea Racing and rider Gino Rea leave their home track in Austin, Texas with heads held high after battling from last to 15th in the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas Moto2 race.
After bike problems forced Gino to qualify at the very back of the grid in 34th position, Rea raced to his renowned ‘Speedy G’ start to move up 17 places on the first lap. After moving into 15th position and amongst a battle with 3 riders ahead, Gino was confident of challenging for a points finish until mid race problems prevented any hope. Gino suffered with severe arm pump, something Rea has never encountered before, which made it near impossible to even open the throttle. On the verge of pitting in, Rea was determined to finish the race but dropped back to 25th position.
Gino Rea (25th): “It’s been a difficult weekend. It started off well Friday, but I didn’t complete one fast lap on Saturday and lost so much track time. During the race, I got off to a great start and was able to pass a lot of riders. I was comfortable battling in 15-16th place, but my arm pumped up mid-race and I lost all feeling in my hand, which made it extremely difficult and dangerous to throttle and brake. I considered pulling in at one point, but I didn’t want to quit. I really wanted to finish here at our teams home track. It was extremely frustrating because it was out of my control, but I will take away the positives and look towards the next race in Argentina. I was happy that I managed to make so many positions up during the first lap, so we will take the positives. After not finishing in Qatar, it was nice to finish the race with the support of the corporate sponsors of AGT and the Livestrong Foundation here backing me the entire time.”
Dave Peterson (Team Owner)“We couldn’t be more proud of Gino and his brave performance this weekend. This was truly a special weekend for AGT Rea Racing. We raced at our home track in the city of Austin. We announced a wonderful partnership with the LIVESTRONG Foundation to help bring additional worldwide exposure to the organization. And we got an opportunity to showcase American Green Technology to an international audience, as well. All in all, a successful and fulfilling weekend!”
Chris Brewer (LIVESTRONG Foundation)“This weekend reaffirmed how good a partnership this really is. Being a trusted resource for people affected by cancer, to have a solid family kind of organization who cares, that is part of who we are and you can tell that is the kind or organization that AGT Rea Racing is, as well. Gino showed a ton of character to overcome adversity and to be very honest about it. We are proud to be a part of this partnership.”
The next race is April 27 in Autódromo Termas de Rio Hondo in Argentina. For more information about Gino Rea and AGT Rea Racing, log onto www.agtrearacing.com and www.facebook.com/agtrearacing
