I started motocross when i was just 3 years old on a Honda QR50, my dad got me a KX 60 for my sixth birthday and I done my first race at 7 and a half years old. I  then went on to progress through the schoolboy motocross ranks at National level. It was time for a change in 2005, I competed in the MRO Superteen championship, then moved to Supermoto, competing in the KTM European Red Bull championship and the Bracken KTM 660 cup in 2006 where i finished 2nd.

I then made a huge step up into the WSBK European Superstock 600cc championship that runs alongside World Superbikes in 2007. I finished 12th in my first year with 1 podium. I continued the same championship with Stonebaker Racing in 2008 and finished a creditable 3rd with 6 podiums and 1 win to my name. Read more here. For 2009 I have signed with the Ten Kate Honda Racing time to race in the 2009 WSBK Superstock 600 Championship. Read more. I have also been givin the opportunity to race a Superstock Ten Kate Fireblade 1000 in the Dutch ONK championship with the Duntep Racing Team which I snapped up! Read more here.

Top Ten for Gino in his World Supersport debut

Starting the Phillip Island WSB race weekend with a new track to learn, new team, new motorcycle and in a new championship, Gino Rea has finished his debut World Supersport race in 10th position, a point scoring ride that everyone is pleased with... apart from Gino. The young Londoner feels he should have not preserved the rear tyre so much and pushed at the start of the race to battle for top 7 positions...

Gino Rea: “That was a frustrating race. Having known what I do now after my first 21 lap race, I would have pushed harder from the beginning and went with the leading group as I think I had the pace. I feel I saved the tyre for too long and it just didnt pay off. I also should have passed both Parkalgars Miguel Pria and Factory Triumphs Jason Disalvo at the end as I had more pace then them. Even with the chassis set up still needing work, I feel I still could have battled for top 6/7 positions. So thats why I'm frustrated. But on the other hand, with so many unknowns coming into this race weekend, we have come away with points and a top 10 for the team. I want to say a massive thanks to Andrew Stone, my chief tech who has worked non stop and believed in me when we hit a brick wall and couldnt improve our set up over practice and qualifying. My mechanics and the whole team too for putting in so much effort and working hard to overcome language issues and to make us feel welcome."

Race Report: "I was initially in 8th position and the race got red flagged due to oil. But the frustrating part for me came in the restart. I got quite a good start, and was around 8th/9th position. Miguel Pria and another rider got past me at the same time when I went a little wide. I thought that Pria would be able to keep with the top 7 riders, but he rode a bit defensive and held us up. It was ok for my race plan anyway as we planned to preserve the tires for the end of the race. My team mate blistered a tyre after 14 laps in practice and we did not have enough time to set the bike up for the other compund tyre. The top 7 riders pulled away but I sat behind Pria preserving my tyres. We started to catch the group ahead towards the end of the race but I couldnt get past Pria who was riding defensively and I ended up in 10th position. Laptime wise, I didnt get to put in anything decent when the tyres where good, but my ideal time from my sectors would have only been 0.8seconds off Laverty's best. So once again, we have close the gap. "

"I also was so close to crashing at Lukey Heights, where Toseland crashed in race 1, I lost the front on the crest and was convinced I had crashed, the front slid and my elbow and knee where on the ground, somehow over the next bump it picked itself up, I was literally hanging off the side!

"Well the first race is out of the way, lets hope for more progress at Portimao in a months time!"

Gino completes Final Qualifying

Gino has continued to progress and has finished the final qualifying session at Phillip Island in 14th place, only 1.5 seconds from the front row. The team have worked hard together all weekend and are still improving the chassis and electronic's set up of the bike.

Gino Rea: “It’s been a challenging start to the season for us. But I like a challenge. New team, new motorcycle, new circuit, new championship. Even though there is a language barrier between Andrew and our mechanics, they have both worked hard to get though it and it has been successful. I’m determined to keep improving and repay the team for their hard work with any points I get.

"We are getting there slowly, our best laptime a 1:35.9, it's 1.5 seconds from Eugune Laverty, who is on the front row. I think considering the limited time we have had on the bike and on a new circuit, it is a respectable laptime. The top teams have had years developing their bikes with electronics etc, we have had two days. It was hard to find a mixture of learning the circuit and trying different things on the bike, which meant we ran out of track time to find the right setting. We still have a long way to go in terms of chassis and electronics. Andrew has been working flat out since we have been here and is improving our set up each time. He has a change for us to try tomorrow which he hopes will be the right direction... if it stays dry, so I'm looking forward to racing! We have discussed set up if it was to rain, but being the first time we have seen the bike this round, we will have to guess one! ”

Tomorrow’s race starts at 1:30 PM local (Melbourne) time, which equals 2:30am in the morning in the UK. The race can be watched on Eurosport or Eurosport 2.

Gino 13th after first Qualifying session Friday at Phillip Island

Gino finished the first day of his World Supersport debut in 13th position, 2.3 seconds from pole position in the first qualifying session.

"It's not been a bad day and we are 2.3 seconds from pole. It's not where I want to be but we have accomplished a lot already. For our first time at the circuit and the first time working together as a new team with a new bike, the team are pleased with the progress. We still have a lot of work to do with the chassis set up and are still setting up electronics and finding the right gearing.

"The qualifying session today didnt start off quite to plan, I ran off track a few times but managed to keep it up-right. I also didn't quite make the most of the new tyre, so together with a chassis change, we have room for improvement.

"The temperature was so hot today that the track conditions where not at its best, we done a race simulation in the free practice to help decide which tyre to use. Having grip from the tyre's at the end of the race is going to be a big factor on Sunday if the temperature is high. At the moment, there is forecast for possible rain tomorrow (Saturday) and also for raceday (Sunday). We will wait and see what happens!"

Successful test of day two at Phillip Island

Gino has completed a successful test at Phillip Island, a week before the race weekend here in Australia. Rea's first visit to the circuit saw him finish todays final session just 1.7 seconds from Eugene Laverty and overall, just over 2 seconds from the quickest rider, Lascorz.

Gino said: "Its been a good two days of testing, and really good to get my first time in the World Supersport paddock out of the way. I am getting along great with the team, everyone is working hard to get to where we need to be and we are all happy.

"There has been lots to learn, set up and to test, all in a short space of time. A really big part of it is learning this circuit. So much of it is blind and theres lots of little techinal things to it, I'm learning everytime I'm out there.

"Over both days, due to weather conditions the pace in the afternoon was generally slower, nearly all riders going faster in the morning. With used tyres I almost matched my laptime from the morning session and there was also a lot more wind. I followed Parkalgars Miguel Pria for a few laps at the end and I'm confident that as we develop the bikes electronics and chassis, we can be competitive. There is still a lot of room for development with the electronics, we are literally touching base with that. The same goes with the chassis set up. Also with my riding and lines.

"In the second session today (Monday), I was 1.7 seconds from Eugene Laverty. For my first time at the circuit, new bike, new team etc, I am pleased. Although I know we can be faster. My best laptime overall was a 1:36.6. In the race the leaders will definitely be doing 1:35s, maybe some 34s, so I'm looking forward to trying to better my laptimes come next weekends WSBK race weekend. Still plenty to learm, I'm soaking it all up. I am a bit battered up from the crash so I'm glad we have a few days off to recover! "

Day one of testing in Phillip Island

Gino has susseccfully completed the first day of testing at Phillip Island, Australia.

"Today has been great, its good to get back on a bike after such a long break. We are working well with the team and its all smiles in the sunshine."The track is really fast and exciting to ride, but also very hard to learn. But im learning it all the time. The TV doesnt give the hills and cambers any justice at all."

"Its good to be in such a premier class and its a friendly paddock with all the brits here. Its great to see James Toseland back in the paddock, I had a chat him with about the circuit for some tips."

"Tomorrow I will continue to learn the circuit and get the bike set up how we want it. The forecast is actually not good for tomorrow, warm but rain. Fingers crossed it doesn't!"

Gino's adventures with a day left before testing begins...

20th february 2010- Gino is getting set for the first day of testing on Sunday here at Phillip Island, Australia. So far he has had a plane detoured, had 3 stiches in his foot, fed Kangeroos and been in a Porsche at the circuit...

Gino said: "It was a long journey getting here! Door to door it took around 38 hours. It didnt help that on the plane to Munich I went to the toilet too late on the descent and they couldn't land the plane, they had to turn it around and try again. I didn't think it would be that big a deal but it turns out there was someone important on the plane. As we was getting off the plane there were two identical BMW X6's waiting, the person had no security checks and was escorted off in one of them, the other car went the opposite way (I guess one was a 'dummy'). Only when I saw that I realised why the pilot and security had such a go at me with terrorists issues etc...

Since then, I've seen penguins come out of the sea at night, surfed a few waves, fed Kangeroos, had 3 stitches in my foot and more importantly been in a Porsche for a few laps of the circuit to help learn it for tomorrow. The track looks exciting, I've watched a lot of videos to try and see where it goes, but its completely different once your on it. The fast corners are really fast and its also a bit narrow. I can't wait to get out on it in the morning!! As for my foot, I opened a metal door with flip flops on and the edge of it caught my foot and ripped a chunk of skin out. I had 3 stiches put in but it should be fine for tomorrow!"

Gino begins testing Sunday morning (11 hours ahead of UK time).

Gino set for debut World Supersport Race in Australia, Phillip Island

The young Londoner is set to make his debut World Supersport race for Intermoto Honda at Australia, Phillip Island in a couple of weeks time. First though, is a official test which takes place at the Phillip Island circuit on the 21st and 22nd Feb, the race taking place a week later on the 28th.

"I'm so excited now, just to get out of this country and to some sunshine is pleasing enough, let alone the thought of getting back onto a bike! We have a 2-day test on the 21st, so I can learn the circuit and start to find a set up to be ready for the race weekend. My plan at the moment is to work hard with my tech Andy to improve in every session, the suspension, my riding, electronics etc. I feel I've done the most I can to be ready for this challenge, from studying previous races and learning the track on playstation to training and being the fittest I've ever been. Let's see how it goes!"

Gino continues with Damen Leathers in 2010

Gino will continue with the Dutch leather company- Damen Leathers, who he rode with in 2009 on the way to the European Superstock title. On Sunday, Rea drove to the Damen Leather factory in Holland to collect his race leathers to have them in time for his flight to Australia tomorrow. Check them out...

Gino Signs with Shark Helmets for World Supersport 2010

Gino made a deal with Shark Helmets for the 2010 World Supersport Championship where he will be racing for Intermoto Honda, starting on the 28th February at Phillip Island, Australia.

Rea said: "I'm happy to get my helmet deal sorted, Shark are a great company and the helmets are fantastic, I hope we can build a good relationship for the future. This morning I have been trying different sized pads and I've found a good fit, which happens to be near enough standard sizes. Now I just cant wait to actually wear it on the bike! I go out to Australia on the 16th Feb so I'm pretty excited. Everythings new; new leathers, new boots, new helmet, new bike, new team, new track. So there's a lot to learn but I'm ready for it."

Gino competes in his first cycle race - Sunday 7th Feb

As part of Gino's pre-season training regime, Rea competed in his first cycle race on Sunday in Dover.

Gino's words: "That was quite different to anything I've done before. As it was my first race I was racing with CAT 3&4 riders (CAT 1 being highest based on point scoring over time), I expected the pace of the whole race to be faster than it was. It was a 1hr30min race and the majority of it seemed to be everyone trying to save themselves for the final sprint (where as I thought it would be near enough sprinting the whole way!). It was so cold there, as its near the coast in Dover so it is windy and feels very bitter. When the pace drops during the race you find yourself at a low heart rate and end up getting really cold. There was a breakaway and 3 riders managed to gap us, not knowing at the time, I feel now I should have went with them. One of the three cramped and couldnt finish but the other 2 stayed out front and finished there.. leaving the peleton group that I was in to fight for 3rd place."

"As we approached the last few laps the pace hotted up, on the final half a lap it raised and raised, being my first race I didnt know what to expect as of when they would go for the final sprint, so I just tried to stay towards the front of the pack. Then one of the teams all made the move together and put a small sprint in and surrounded me to try and push me back. I stayed on them and gave it all I had at the final sprint to the line, just squezzing back past a couple of the team riders and beating the rest of them for 5th place (3rd in the final sprint!). A good experience, one I will definitely want to do again... when the sun comes out!!"

Gino Rea meets up with Moto GP rider Jorge Lorenzo today at motocross track in Spain

Gino has been staying with Dave Dormer in Spain for the last two weeks to prepare for the 2010 race season. Read here.

After training with BSB champ Leon Camier last week, Gino arranged to meet up with Jorge Lorenzo at a local motocross track today.

Rea said 'Today we went to a local motocross track, unfortunately my motocross bike went back to the UK with Leon, so me and Dave took the MTB bikes becasue there are some good trails there. We arranged to meet up with Jorge Lorenzo who has been pre-season training out here near Catalunya as well. It was cool to meet him in person, outside of racing. I really look up to him as a rider and admire what he has done in his career. But I must say I can show him the way round on the motocross bikes!'

Gino Rea pre-season training with BSB champ Leon Camier in Spain

Read here on MCN

European Superstock 600cc Champion Gino Rea and BSB Champ Leon Camier have been making the most out of the good weather in Spain.

Like the beginning of 2009, Rea has been in Spain for pre-season training since the 9th Jan. The newly crowned European Superstock 600 Champion drove over with BSB Champion Leon Camier to avoid the British weather conditions. Starting off in the south of Spain near Murcia, cycling up to 4 hours a day with some motocross training, Gino then continued his training and stayed further north at Lloret de Mar while Leon headed back home to get ready for testing.

Rea said: 'Last year we went out to Lloret de Mar in Feb for our pre-season training, I really enjoyed it and it made the world of difference. With the snow, ice and freezing cold temperatures at home in the uk, it makes it hard to train properlyl. It was a long drive down here but it has definitely been worth it. On the way here we went through some really bad snow in France, we done a total hours of around 19 hours driving, plus the stops for food etc.

The weathers been nice here in Spain only with a odd day of rain. We have been hard at work and cycled around 220km+ in just the first two days when we arrived and have been clocking up the miles since. Along with some good motocross sessions, we also done 1000 press ups and 1000 sits ups in a day.

Im looking forward to getting things finalised for this year, but in the meantime all I can do is keep fit and healthy.'

More news to come soon...

Gino Rea and Andrew Stone to join forces in the World Supersport Championship 2010

After a successful year working together in 2008 where Rea finished 3rd in the European Superstock 600cc championship, Gino went on to win the same title in 2009 with the Ten Kate Jnr team. The duo will work together again in 2010 but this time in the World Supersport Championship, with the K+L Intermoto Honda Team. Intermoto Honda ran the experienced Massimo Roccoli this year and had one podium finish and consistently placed in the top 6. After a successful test with the team at Cartagena, it looks set for Gino to sign for the 2010 season.

Full details to come soon.

Successful Test for Rea in Cartagena

Gino has been testing with the Intermoto Czech Republic team over the last two days at the Cartagena circuit in Spain.

Gino and manager Andrew Stone have been working with the team alongside their current rider Italian Supersport champion and podium finisher Massimo Roccoli. MotoGP 250cc star Lukas Pesek is alsot here to learn the four stroke. Pesek is a top 10 rider in the 250gp's and next year he is racing in Moto2. At the end of the second day it has been a successful test. Gino, Andrew and the Andreani tech have been improving the bike set up and Gino has been getting faster over the test, now on pace with the more experienced Roccoli.

Gino's words: 'The first day of the test was good but we spent nearly all of the day trying to fix one problem, which just didnt seem to go away. Today has been much, much better and our pace is a lot quicker. I have quickly learnt that you ride a supersport bike different to a superstock and have been getting faster and faster as we work hard to find a good base setting. We are now on pace with Roccoli, who has also tested here before. He is no slouch and has podiumed this year in the World Supersport championship. So we are happy so far, but we still have work to do. We dont have much time on the bike tomorrow but in the time we do have, we will try and improve the set up. The team are happy with how the test has gone, they did not feel the need for us to do the third day, but me and Andrew still feel we can improve the bike and laptimes.

We have had a formal offer to race in the World Supersport Championship with Intermoto Racing. We now have to negotiate and consider the offer against other opportuntites we have.

Andrew has had a phone call from the Red Rooster team that we raced for in China, to fly out to India and talk terms for 2010.'

Gino heads for World Supersport test in Spain

A busy schedule has not stopped Gino looking forward to his second World Supersport test since clicnhing the World Superstock 600 championship at Portimao.

Rea has had a hectic day in terms of flights, after winning the Asian GP in China, Gino and his manager flew a 13 hour flight on Monday night from Hong Kong to Amsterdam, then another back to London Heathrow. A few hours at home, then back to London Gatwick for a flight to Alicante. Only for the plane to have a techinal fault and half hour later be returned back to Gatwick. They currently await a flight to Spain so they can test at Cartagena tomorrow morning.

After 4 planes in 24hours, Gino and Andy are left pretty jetlagged but still cant wait to get out on track in the morning. Gino's comments where "Well 4 is a good number! But hopefully this will be the last plane until we return home in a few days! Il try and put my head down to get some sleep for tomorrow!"

Check back for more updates on the test.

Gino wins in China, Asian GP from Zhuhai

Gino's Day-by-day Diary from Zhuhai, China - Day 6- Sunday 13th December

The extremes of ups and downs! So we started the day on a very low but ended the day on a high and bought the team their first win in the Asian Grand Prix.

Coming into this race I really didnt know what to expect, I didnt think the championship would be as big and as professional as it is. The level of riders is much higher than what I anticipated. But when you take a look at what some of them have achieved, like ex 250cc MotoGP rider and All- Japan champion Inagaki Makoto, 7-time Asian champion Toshiyuki Hamaguchi and the teams involved like Petronas, you realise just how big of a series it is.

The first race didnt quite go to plan, starting from 4th on the front row I got a good start and was up to 3rd, after running a small bit wide Japanese rider and All- Japan champion (a big title!!) Inagaki Makoto came past. I sat in 4th and felt pretty relaxed. On the 3rd lap on the exit of a very fast right hand corner, I was out near the kurbs and as I went to brake for the next left hand turn (at around 110mph), I lost the front in pretty much a straight line. I went down quite hard and as I hit the floor, a rider hit me from behind, our bikes slid on and took the next three riders out, leaving one on fire! I was up to my feet and trying to say sorry to the riders, I felt so bad and im very sorry for what happened but its racing. Its also my first ever crash in a race, at the end of my third year racing! From the video footage, my manager says that I was hit from behind as I touched the brakes, but im not blaming anyone. The race was red flagged, we was allowed to restart but had a few things to sort out, the bike was a little bit damaged and my leathers where totally written off with big holes in them, so we had to buy a new off the peg set. Which actually fitted nicely! Although we didnt have time to restart the race. On to race two...

With brand new leathers and slightly aching I wasnt sure I would be able to run the pace from the start. I got a better start this time and led into the first corner, I led a couple of laps before a Petronas Yamaha rider came past. I stuck behind him for a couple of laps before being demoted back to 3rd. I knew its a long race so I I tried to use my head and stayed there for a couple more laps. The leader started to pull a little gap so I made a pass back into 2nd, then a lap or two later re-took the lead. I started to have a few problems with the brake leaver coming into the bar and a bit of a aching body from the first race crash. Braking hard and late is a important part of laptimes at this circuit, so when my brake lever started coming back to the bar I got a bit worried. I had no feeling in what the brake was doing so sometimes when I squeezed it to the bar the back wheel would come off the ground. I went back to 3rd again and made a mistake trying to stay with the leaders. They pulled a gap and with 3 laps to go I put my head down to close back up. With 2 laps to go I made a pass on both of them to take the lead. A Petronas Yamaha came past me on the brakes but went in too deep and I went back up the inside. He tried again on another hairpin but was way too deep again and I was back up the inside. I put my head down and pushed to gap them, although I didnt know I had a little lead over second going into one of the final hairpins, I broke as late as I could, the brake lever come into the bar, the back wheel was in the air and I just about stopped, I crossed the line with 0.5second lead!

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped over the weekend, from my manager Andy, Torlief and everyone in the Red Rooster Racing team. Everyone has worked so hard all weekend, Andy was really hard on the guys in the team in terms of making sure they do everything right and to get things sorted. After the crash in race one, im so gald to be able to pay the team back and credit them with their first win.

I fly back to London on Monday night, then me and Andy jump on a plane to Spain for a World Supersport test.

2009 European Superstock 600 Champion Gino Rea tested Racing Team Germany’s FTR Moto2 bike in Almeria in southern Spain on Wednesday. The British rider adapted quickly to the new machine, which is built by Buckingham-based FTR, and ran impressive times along with Racing Team Germany's already signed rider Arne Tode

Rea said: “I managed to get some laps on the FTR Moto 2 bike when instructing at Almeria with Racedays. It only had a stock CBR600 engine in it so the power wasn’t so special, but it was really loud, like a MotoGP bike. Read more...

World Supersport: Rea impresses Yamaha on Crutchlow's mount

New by Crash.net 29-10-09 Gino Rea staked his claim to graduate from the European Superstock 600 Championship in 2010 to World Supersport (WSS), following a head-turning test on the ex-Cal Crutchlow Yamaha at Portimao...

Recently-crowned European Superstock 600 Champion Gino Rea impressed Yamaha as he tried out the bike that helped to carry Cal Crutchlow to 2009 World Supersport Championship title glory at Portimao.

The young Londoner travelled to the Portuguese circuit – scene of the season's WSS title-decider only a handful of days earlier – after mentor Andrew Stone secured him an eleventh-hour opportunity to test the factory SSP YZF R6, meaning Rea returned to Britain from Portimao on Monday only to be informed that he would need to fly back out there again a matter of hours later.

What's more, a best lap time of 1m 46.423s was only a second shy of the pace of Eugene Laverty, who had taken the chequered flag first on Sunday, and his long-run turn of speed was good enough that it would have seen him finish tenth in the race, ahead of no less than double WSS Champion Andrew Pitt on the works ten Kate Honda.

“The bike was amazing to ride,” Rea enthused, quoted by Visordown. “I think I could have posted a 1m 45s lap, but my final test session was red-flagged and finished ten minutes early, which meant I only got two and a half sesisons on the, just over a race distance. The squad was great fun to work with and the Yamaha team bosses seemed happy with my performance, which is the main thing.

“I've matched the pace of Anthony West and of James Ellison, who had more track time than me, on a bike I'd never ridden before – so I've got to be happy!”
